Helpful Tips On Running For Beginners: Part 2

Running can be a bit of a pain if you’re not doing it right, but we’ve got you covered! If you missed the first part of this series, feel free to go ahead and read it. In the meantime, here are more helpful tips for you beginner runners to keep in mind:

1. Start off slowly

Many people are eager to run fast to cover the distance they want, but that could exhaust you quickly while putting a lot of stress on your body and be more prone to injury. Starting off at a slower pace throughout your whole run will give your body the training it needs to get used to the physical demands of running. Build yourself up, because slow and steady does actually win the race.

2. Find your motivation

It can be difficult sometimes to find some motivation to go for your runs or to keep moving. Try different things to see what works for you. For example, perhaps running with other people can set that fire in you. They can provide some support, conversation to distract you, or you might find yourself wanting to keep up! Whatever the reason is, running with other people can be a quick fix when it comes to lack of motivation. Another thing you can do it set up a great playlist of all your favorite songs or an interesting podcast to distract you a bit and will keep your blood pumping. Find what motivates you, and don’t be afraid to experiment a little!

3. Recovery time

After your first run, you’ll feel pretty great. You may be in a little bit of pain, but it’s the good kind of pain. You might even feel so good that you want to head out the next day for another run, but this is likely a bad idea. You need to give your body some time to recover from something it’s not used to. It needs some time to adapt to the new demands your giving it so that you won’t injure yourself. After every running day, take the next day to rest. Do this for a while, until your body is more prepared to handle your routine.

There are of course many other tips and motivations to make the most out of your running experience, but we cover the basics in this two-part mini-series on running tips. To add some extra motivation, try reading Running Ransom Road, by Caleb Daniloff. This riveting story follows the journey of a man who found himself after a period of darkness in his life through long-distance running.
